This is one of those scenes that you pull from life experiences. Not that I ever was in a cabin after fighting a monster… I mean the draw that staring into a fire can have on your imagination.
“Mik sat, eyes transfixed on an ember that burned brightly in the middle of the fireplace. It was the crystalline quality of the burning wood that seemed to create an almost infinite depth. In his mind’s eye, Mik saw himself traveling into those depths, marveling at the expanses and structures that opened for him to discover. A place where he could escape. Where outsiders and oonmin did not seek to disrupt people’s lives and separate him from the people he loved. He wanted to be home in The Village with Mom and Dad, sitting down to a breakfast of bacon and eggs.”
